How to measure Scrotal Circumference

After the testes and epididymides are palpated to ensure that they are normal, the testes are pushed firmly into the lower part of the scrotum so that they are side by side and scrotal wrinkles that may inflate the measurement are eliminated. The testes are held down within the scrotum by placing the fingers and thumb at the sides of the scrotal neck; however, if the testes are forced down too strongly, softer testicles will compress and expand horizontally, resulting in an inflated measurement.  The fingers or thumb must not be placed between the testes, forcing them apart, as this may also falsely increase the measurementWhen the testes are held correctly for measurement, using moderate pressure if necessary to hold them in the bottom of the scrotum and with the operators elbow held somewhat centrally to avoid a possible injury should the bull lift his hock, the scrotum will rest partially on the operator’s wrist.

People with small hands may find that holding the testes down in the scrotum for measurement is difficult, especially when the scrotum is not relaxed due to chilly temperatures. Holding the testes in position for measurement may be facilitated by placing a ¼ or 3/8 inch diameter soft rope around the neck of the scrotum.  A 5-foot length of rope is ideal and a half hitch should be used to loop around the neck of the scrotum and the ends are held by an assistant while the measuring is done. Sooner or later, it is almost certain that the rope around the scrotum will be forgotten and a bull will be let out off the chute with it still in place.  Using a short rope will prevent the bull from stepping on the rope possibly leading to testis injury. Use of a half hitch will ensure that the rope loosens immediately as the bull walks away. Alternatively, a 1-inch wide belt with velcro could be used instead of a rope and it would eliminate the need for an assistant holding the rope ends during measurement.

A tape measure is looped around the greatest diameter of the testes and pulled snugly so that the tape is firmly in contact with the entire circumference. Measurements must be done carefully and repeated to ensure accuracy and repeatability.

Technique for the ReliaBull tape

Encircle the neck of scrotum with one hand using moderate pressure to stabilize the testes in the base of the scrotum.

Place the tape over the largest diameter of the scrotum and press on the piston with your thumb.

Align the junction of green and red at the edge of the block to obtain the correct amount of tension. Read the measurement at the edge of the block (arrow).
