Although normal testicular tissue compresses only slightly, varying degrees of tape tension can create significant error in scrotal circumference measurement. The premise that all measurements should be done with equal tension has led to the development of spring-scale mechanisms in scrotal circumference measuring tapes, and the ReliaBull is currently the only SC tape available with a spring-scale mechanism.
The ReliaBull’s ease of use allows anyone at any level of experience to achieve correct, repeatable results with the consistent application of five pounds of pressure during measurement. This amount of tension has been used for decades to obtain SC data, and is sufficient to press through a thickened scrotal wall due to fat or cool temperatures. It should be noted, however, that very cool temperatures or excessive fat in the scrotum may result in slightly larger measurements than when the scrotum is relaxed in warm temperatures, or after a fat bull loses weight, even when measurements are done properly with a spring scale tape.
